What does the "grammar" in grammar schools mean/signify?

Hi there. When these schools were being set up originally, all learning considered of value for the rich attendees was based on grammar - English, French, Latin and Greek. They had no interest in teaching science, maths or anything else, that all came much later and the original name has stuck. Cheers, Steve.

It actually does come from the meaning of grammar as we all know it. According to an online etymological dictionary: A grammar school (1387) was originally "a school in which the learned languages are grammatically taught" [Johnson, who also has grammaticaster "a mean verbal pedant"]. In U.S. (1860) the term was put to use in the graded system for "a school between primary and secondary, where English grammar is taught."

It basically signifies the fact that your parents are educated to the extent of recognising differences or in possession of a inherited wealth.. with interest in thier children. As 4 the meaning doesnt need questioning. Am care full.
