Why do Americans always say happy holidays in place of merry Christmas?
-
I always watch commercials and other things and all they say is "Happy holidays" without ever saying merry christmas. The same applies to when people see each other, they say Happy holidays. How many holidays at all do workers get in December especially during the Christmas period? Its only on the 25th and perhaps 1st of January to,but all they say is happy holidays. Can someone explain the rationale behind this greetings or statement and why dont people just say Merry christmas as most Saxons do?

Answer:
I live in Minneapolis, which is in Minnesota. I go to grad school with several Jewish people and a number of Hindus. Several of my neighbors are Muslim. My boyfriend is an atheist. So if I'm going to send Christmas cards, I'm going to say something that sounds friendly and welcoming to EVERYONE, even the people in my life who don't celebrate Christmas (and there are a lot of them). The U.S. isn't solely a Christian nation. A lot of people don't celebrate Christmas but still deserve holiday greetings like everyone else.

It's to be politically correct because Christmas implies a belief in Christ and since everyone isn't a Christian they say Happy Hollidays.

Some may celebrate Hanuka instead of Christmas.
