What is Sunshine Empire?

Bask in the sunshine? warm ourselves in the sunshine?

  • In winter, it happens to be a sunny day. So I say to my son, "Let's go out and bask in the sunshine", or "Let's go out and warm ourselves in the sunshine", or "Let's go out and get warmer in the sunshine". Which is natural? Also these three sentences: "That old man is basking in the sunshine", "That old man is warming himself in the sunshine", "That old man is getting warmer in the sunshine". Which one is better?

  • Answer:

"Let's go out and bask in the sunshine." This is perfectly natural and more expressive than 'warm ourselves'. Bask has overtones of enjoyment that 'warm' does not. "Let's go out and get warmer in the sunshine". This is most unnatural of the three and I struggle to think of an occasion where it might used. Perhaps if you were cold inside your house you could use it.

Actually, what I'm used to saying/hearing: "Let's go out and get some sun." Never really use "bask". As for your second one: "That old man is soaking up some sunshine." or "That old man is getting some sun." Guess it depends on what part of the world we come from as to which to use.

I think that "Let's go out and bask in the sunshine" is the best way of saying it. Same with "That old man is basking in the sunshine." "Bask" is a good, expressive word.
