Can I copyright my website?

Can I copyright my website?

  • So I have a very large, successful, and active RPG (role playing game). Its very different from other rpgs and I've never seen another site with the same rules, ideas, and structure. It occurred to me today though that I have none of this copyrighted and other people are starting to make RPG's similar to mine. Could I copyright anything on my website? (the name, ideas, etc.) If someone else copyrighted these ideas would I have to close my own website? (even though the ideas originally came from me)

  • Answer:

AFAIK you can copyright text and artwork, you can trademark logos, and you might possibly be able to patent a process. If it has not previously been published and is not obvious. If you have prior art you could defend a patent action. Helps if you have better lawyers. I don't think you can benefit from copyright unless someone is totally ripping off your characters directly. Just doing something vaguely similar is not close enough. But I'm not a lawyer.
