What jobs are available with a finance and international affairs major?

Are there jobs for finance majors that accounting majors cant do?

  • I always hear that accounting majors can do any finance jobs, if this is true then why would people go for finance instead of accounting? do you actually gain less if you studied finance compared to accounting? thanks in advance

  • Answer:

That's not necessarily true. I don't think a single investment bank would hire a person who had only done straight accounting and had absolutely no finance knowledge. It depends on what you want. People who go into finance jobs claim they don't need accounting knowledge (I disagree, I think you need accounting knowledge in every job in the commercial world). In accounting jobs, however, you only really need a basic knowledge of finance. An introductory finance subject at University would be enough, you don't really need to know how to price complicated financial instruments, for example. I don't think you gain less if you studied finance compared with accounting, it really depends on what type of work you want to do. If you have your heart set on being an investment banker than you probably don't need accounting that much. And if you have your heart set on being a tax accountant, then you probably don't need finance that much. Having knowledge in both does help, though.
