To make the best profit from selling online, I would advise missing out e-bay altogether - or using it as an advertising portal for an online store. I used to run an online store and manage an e-bay store, selling household appliances. In order to compete with the big boys online, my average markup was only 15%. If i sold an item through e-bay, I'd be left with very little profit. E-bay can proove very expensive, taking approx 11% of your sales. The same sale through my online store would cost me about 2%. You do of course need to take advertising into account. An online store's no use without visitors. For my store I advertised through google and found the cost to work out at around 2%. Taking this into account, my online store would make approx 3 times more profit than it's e-bay equivelent. These profit margins sound very low, but the product was well sought after and there was a lot of competition. (Non- the-less the online store was bringing in over £1m per month by it's 6th month) To start selling when you have an un-recognised name and no history, you have to be the cheapest. If you cant afford to sell slightly less than everywhere else, don't bother trying. Once your established and you have a reputation, you'll be able to increase your prices. Regarding products to sell, pick something you are interested in rather than what will give you the biggest return. It will make your life much happier and easier. If you haven't got a passion for it, you aint gonna sell it! Since I no longer work for the appliance company, I've set up for myself making on line stores for other people. I currently run this one http://www.mdapro.co.uk for myself. To give you an idea of pricing, a site like this, (without the forum), would cost you in the region of about 3k and take about 3 months to set up - including setting up your business, your advertising, a merchant account, etc. HTH Dave

Hi there, I am a Powerseller on eBay and information is the thing that everyone wants - they pay a fortune for it, especially your own information that you have written yourself as it will not be offered elsewhere so you will have the monopoly. Moneymaking ebooks (files of information that people pay for and you send them as an email attachment) sell the best. However, I am now the owner of FuelPay and we have a unique product that EVERYONE wants - and I sell it all day long to any company that uses petrol, diesel or "gas"/gasoline. We are genuinely making £1,000s from this each and every week and you can, too. Please call 0845-62-62-222 and visit http://www.fuelpay.co.uk for more information. The product is due to launch officially in UK on 9th September when it will become a household name - now is the time to join us and make a genuine fortune out of the one, unrivalled, product that EVERYONE wants. Best wishes, Merril [email protected]

Your first stop should be eBay's Guide to Seller Services http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/services.html eBay's Seller Central has all the resources you need to learn about the basics of selling on eBay http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/index.html To learn about ebay stores, go to http://pages.ebay.com/storefronts/start.html The key to a successful eBay selling is simple -- Sell products that people actually want. Buying from garage sales and selling on eBay is fun, and good getting a few dollars here and there from ebay. Sometimes, you luck out on an item and hit big, but many times it will just be so-so (assuming you can even get the price you paid for it). In terms of fun factor, it is great. But from a business stand-point, it is not sustainable. If you want to earn serious money from eBay, you need to have a well-thought out business model. Selling on eBay is not as easy as some portray. In fact, go to eBay and check out the number of auctions that end without a single bid. Competition is getting tough, as more sellers go to eBay; even the big boys are joining in the eBay marketplace. Add to that the increasing listing and final value fees. eBay has several ways for you to determine exactly what the hot items to sell on their marketplace: Items In Demand = the most popular items currently within that particular category. To see the In Demand page, go to http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/sellbycategory.html Hot Items by Category Report = a monthly report that lists the fastest growing categories on eBay for the previous month. Go to http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/whatshot.html and select "Hot Items by Category" from the menu on the left. eBay Pulse = "a daily snapshot of current trends, hot picks, and cool stuff on eBay". Go to http://pulse.ebay.com/ to see eBay Pulse in action. Merchandising Calendar = eBay promotes specific categories on its home page each month. Savvy eBayers know that this home page exposure results in more interest in such categories. Go to http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/calendar.html to view the current Merchandising Calendar. Small Chinese-manufactured items like mobile, electronics, computer games, trainers, walkmans, memory sticks etc. Establishing a link with someone out there or flying yourself is tricky, but rewarding once established. Hope this helps
