How are the characteristics of a business owner similar to that of a professional athlete?

  Persistence, discipline, and confidence. Mainly the first two. You have to have a lot of discipline especially. Like the athlete who is constantly training and raising the bar, the business minded person is disciplined in saving his money, sacrificing having fun now, so that he can be a business owner and have real fun later on in life. I read an article that said that one of the key characteristics self made millionaires share is discipline. It's tempting to want to buy new cars, go on vacations, etc. I also heard a report that said that about 95% of US millionaires don't have a college degree, not that it doesn't hurt to have one. The point is some people have the desire, persistence, drive, and discipline. Some people will finish college and go work for minimum wage. Will they make a good business partner? They would need to know the business first. They could make great leaders for a business though. But that depends on their interpersonal skills. They have to know how to treat others. If they've always been training and don't have much experience working with others, it may not work.
