How can I make money or win prizes online without having to refer people or pay for offers?

Hello I suggest you use SurveySavvy.com in addition to the other solid companies mentioned above, especially the one where the guy dropped in his referral link. SurveySavvy has been around since 1993 and is a member of the Better Business Bureau. A typical survey takes 15 minutes to complete and pay between $2-$5. Also you can cash out anytime even if they only owe you like $2. Their primary problem is that most users only receive 3-5 surveys a month. Obviously your not going to make a killing on SurveySavvy but it is a legitimate company that can earn you a few bucks. Definitely a company worth checking out. Okay... making money by taking surveys is a long and slow process. I have made almost $25 in the past 2 weeks on Fusion Cash (http://www.fusioncash.net/?ref=lameremusicale ... yeah, that's my referral link, at least I'm honest! haha) ... On FC, you get paid $5 to start up through my link, then you can do a daily pay to click for 15 cents, and then two daily surveys for $1.75. Then there are various offers you can complete for anywhere from 25 cents to several dollars. yes, there are some trial offers but I have made all my earnings in JUST free no credit card offers. You also get $3 a month just by posting at least 30 times in the forums.. which I think is fun. There are referral bonuses (if you sign up through my link I get $1, then your first offer I get $2, and your first cashout of 25 bucks I get $1 again get it?) So besides from survey sites, there's KGB... people text questions and you answer them for 10 cents a question. It's fun and takes a long tiem to make money but still.. it's a "job" instead of doing surveys. Chacha.com is the same thing as kgb pretty much.. I think you can only work for one or the other (I do KGB and like it better) Keyforcash.com is data entry... it's 40 cents per 1000 keystrokes.. again, FUN to do. I've made $10 in 5 days (I only have time to get on the computer for about an hour or two a day so I only do KFC for a few mins here and there) Good luck!
