How To Avoid Power Cut?

Electric Company cut my power off even though I paid my bill!?

  • I live in Knoxville TN (Go Vols) and our Electric Company KUB cut our power off this morning at 10am and I told the Tech that we paid our bill and KUB is making a mistake! The Tech said yeah yeah what ever (in a sarcastic way) next time pay your bill and this wont happen!I said well it not only can happen but it is happening as we speak! So I have a cordless phone and it requires power to work so I couldn't call anyone and I have no car so I couldn't drive to KUB,so I had to sit in the house for 5hrs with nothing till my mom got off work!It was 85 degrees today! So I get to KUB and this lady is going on about KUB cutting her power off when she only owed $15 and I said that's nothing, they cut my power off and I owed them nothing! So I get up to the clerk and I explain what has happened and I give her my receipt that shows I did pay and what I had been through. And she never says a word and she types in my information cause it turns out who ever took our money never put anything in the system so God knows what happen to it.And she says well we fixed your problem!I said no you caused my problem and there for you didn't fix anything! So 2hrs later that ******** Tech shows up and he looks at me with shame and turns my power back on and leaves! No I'm sorry,No my fault,Not even that stupid saying My Bad!Nothing!Anyone else ever had this happen?Cause I never have till today! So when you pay your bill make damn sure you keep your receipt cause Lord knows they wont have it in their systems!

  • Answer:

The link below is for the Tennessee Regulatory Authority Utility - Complaint Form While you could take the utility to small claims court claiming defamation and loss of services etc. The utility unlike you have attorneys and can drag this out or counter sue you. Plus it costs $184.50 filing fee. I would complain to the regulatory authority and I would writ ethe president of the utility explaining that you were humiliated by the employee and accused falsely of non-payment. See if you gain any satisfaction from them or at least an apology

I'm sure this was very upsetting and uncomfortable for you, but you have to realize that KUB and other utilities go through this every day. People call up and say "I paid my bill", but they really didn't. In your case, there was either a human error or a computer error. If you got a computer-generated receipt, it should have automatically updated your account. It didn't. That generated a message that your account was delinquent. A few things to know: 1. Always keep a corded telephone in your house. In the event of a power outage, you can still make a phone call. You can get one for less than $15. It could save a life. 2. Always keep your receipt. You did the right thing there. However, did you give them the receipt number over the telephone? That might have speeded up the procedure of correcting the mistake. 3. Never get mad in situations like this. It doesn't help and often makes things worse. That's why you did not get an apology. They just wanted to get you out of the building without a further scene. And the technician only knows that he is suppose to restore service. He doesn't have any other information, so it is not his place to apologize. 4. If you can calm down and do so pleasantly, you can write to KUB and ask for an apology and an adjustment on the bill. If things in your refrigerator/freezer were ruined, write down what they are and what they cost. Include that in your letter. Don't DEMAND anything, just spell out what happened and ask for reimbursement and an adjustment.
