How can I patent an idea cheaply?

  First hing you need to do is send it to yourself. And not open it. This will give you the proof that you had the idea first (if its the case). Then you can either go through the patent office yourself and file the paperwork or go through a lawyer. You can go to a company with it, but make sure you have proof it was your idea first and that you pitched it to them in case they try to take it from you.
