Game Programming or Game Art?

Becoming a Game Designer (With no programming skills?)?

  • I really want to become a video game designer, but im not interested in the programming parts or art parts. (I suck at math and suck at art) but I want to design the whole sentimental structure of the game. The story, characters, game mechanics, basically the idea man and how everything will work. Can i do this? I read this somewhere.... "Those wishing to work in the creative side do not necessarily need knowledge of any coding, but tend to come from the areas of media or degrees in English literature and other similar areas." Is this true I can get a job like this? Right now im doing average in my GCSE's but excelling in my English GCSE (Getting A's) What A-levels do I take in college? http://www.camsfc.ac.uk/info1/260/AS-&-A-Levels Here are the courses at my college, what ones should I take? I want to be like Shigeru Miyamoto or Tetsuya Nomura people that don't neccaccarly code, but come up with the ideas. Thanks (PS. I am very enthusiastic and I have designed over 100 documents in which I plan my games with, Including, chars, backstory ect.)

  • Answer:

Yes it is possible. That's what I would like to become. Although the problem is, you will have to start out as something else in the gaming industry. A designer is a higher level in the video game making, although it still earns less than a programmer does. You will have to know how to present your work to your team, so many people become a programmer first, which let's them know how the document is best written for the programmers to realise it. This is what I would do: - Study ICT Programming on 'lower (basics)', Maths on 'medium (basics of functions)' and all sorts of English studies on 'High (A)'. Remember to study a bit of History too, to help make strategy games or real-based-games. - Basic University during 4 years. - After Graduation, take half time extra courses in the gaming field, during 1 year. - Work in an Indy team in all fields during 2 years. - Design your own games for 1 year. - Perfection them and present them to a more popular company. - Work for them during 4 years, as Designer. - Then apply for 'Game Designer' at a 'top-of-the-industry', such as Electronic Arts, Rockstar Games, Ubisoft, Konami and so on.... So you should have your Dream Job at either 26 years old, or 30 at a top of the brand.

I starred your question because I wish to know more about this as well. Becoming the "idea man" as you put it is my life dream.
