  Once the Crucible is connected to the Citadel, nothing happens. The crucible is not a super weapon like everyone thought. All it did was awaken the catalyst (the kid) and give Shepard the opportunity to make a choice: Destroy the reapers, control them, or combine all synthetic and organic life into a new form. The ending is pretty much the same for each choice, but with different colored explosions. Though if you have a high enough EMS rating you will see survivors on earth, and possibly survive yourself. Most people are disappointed with the ending because of the massive plot holes. You aren't the only one who was confused.
