Will you still get Sims 3 if it has that SecuROM DMR security?
-
I was searching for previously answered yahoo questions about how many times you can install Spores to your computer (since I have the game and I installed it twice, so I was curious). Anyways, what I found was a lot of people talking about something called SecuROM and DMR stuff that allows you only to install Spores 3 times. Also, in one of the answers, there was a link to amazon.com reviews, where over 2000 people made 1/5 star review/rants about Maxis/EA games cheating their honest customers, and forcing some to turn to piracy, etc. Since Spores is made by the makers of Sims, I would like to know, will you buy the Sims 3 if it has this SecuROM DMR security that limits the ammount of installation? I'm personally debating about it in my head because the Sims 3 looks really promising, and I haven't played since the original, so I'm pretty excited.....but on the other hand, I would like to play this game again in 10 years or something, or if I ever get a new computer (which I plan on in the Summer). What are your thoughts? Thanks

Answer:
No, I will not be buying Sims 3. I have already made a stand by refusing to buy any Sims 2 expansions beyond Seasons, which is when EA decided to start slapping Securom on its Sims 2 discs. The 3 time installation limit is a joke, but even more troubling is the serious issues it can cause for people's computers. Securom is able to cripple your PC because it installs itself to places in your PC which should only be accessed by the most critical parts of your PC, the kernel, and in this way it it identical to the rootkit of a virus. Writing itself to the kernel of your PC allows Securom to shut down other programs on your PC that it shouldn’t be allowed to shut down. This includes equipment that you’re legally allowed to have. It is also notorious for crashing people's CD and DVD drives. There are also serious concerns about Securom attempting to steal your personal information and send it to Sony. From the earliest introduction of Securom into the Sims2 games, it was noted that the Sims 2 exe was attempting to independently dial out to Sony. This is of great concern because when it attempts to dial out, it uses what is called ssl connection, which means the connection is secure and it encrypts the data it sends to Sony so no-one is able to read the information Securom is sending home. This transmission is of great concern because the Securom website states clearly that Securom can be used to collect marketing data from customers. The Spore backlash on Amazon was a great example of people power. Maybe the US Government is listening. The US Federal Trade Commission is currently looking to convene a panel to discuss issues relating to DRM and its effects on the consumer. A town hall type meeting is scheduled for March 25, 2009 at the University of Washington Law School in Seattle. It's open to the public, and additionally the FTC has provided an online form for anyone to impart their thoughts or experiences regarding DRM until January 30. There are also a number of class action lawsuits in the works against EA Games involving Securom. I've never heard that, and Yea, I had spore too, And I got bored of it and gave it to my older brother and im sure I'll never re-install it. But your right, I have a tendencies to un-install the sims and install World of warcraft and vise verse. But yea, I have Sims3 pre-ordered the collectors edition. SOOOO excited. I've been playing the Sims since I was about 9 when it came out. =]
