What is your message to the industry?

What message is the video game industry sending when they make and sell violent games?

  • New target of contention? The new Gears of War 2 by Microsoft: http://us.i1.yimg.com/videogames.yahoo.com/feature/gears-of-war-2-too-violent-for-some-/1212888 I have no problems with some of the games I've bought. Even RPGs are considered 'violent' (cause you have to defeat your enemies through the usual "hack and slash" methods of disposing of your foes. For example? One of my characters in Disgea 2 has the "Vulcan Fire" ability: It's a chain-attack combo that can put a serious hurt on any enemy you come across), there are just comes I can't stomach. Sure, Halo was a riot and I loved the comedy that went with it, but there are just some games I won't play. But lately, the video games I've seen come even blow this die-hard gamer away. So it made me wonder: Just what it is that the video game industry is trying to accomplish by trying to "out gore" the other guy?

  • Answer:

You should ask the film and television industry the same question. I think it's funny how there is so much sex and violence in the media, but i someone says f*ck, the world ends.

make more money, seems like a wide audience is loving more gore.

I think the message is "we want to make money and we know people will buy this game"

"You want it, you got it!" Gimme your wallet.

The industry has grown up wether people are willing to accept it or not. The Average gamer today is in his/her mid 20's, therefore they have to look at it from a business perspective and market products accordingly.

It's not really that they are "trying to out gore the other guy," but they are indeed trying to compete in that particular genre. It's no different than one company trying to "out brain twist the other" with puzzles games. You can't just target one genre and ask a question like this when it's relative to all genres, not just violent/gore games. Why do horror movie directors try to out scare the other and mystery directors trying to out shock the other....it's the way the world goes. It's competition and that's the rules....out shine the brightest star.

I don't see violence in video games a problem. I don't play them just because they don't interest me. Although, I find myself amused running people over in Grand Theft Auto. I would never do it in real life simply because they're real people with thoughts and feelings; not pixelated images. I'm not sure why there is so much gore in video games. That's why I like Nintendo. Nintendo doesn't feel it needs to out-gore anyone, even in a gaming society where gore brings in the buck. Nintendo is honest and makes games that everyone will love. Mario is one example. I absolutely love that little plumber. None of his games are gorey, and I really wouldnt' call them violent unless you call Mario's little hiney being burnt by Bowser extreme violence. I have a problem when violent games get in the hands of young children. Parents don't seem to care anymore what games their children are playing. My boyfriends younger brothers play Halo, and I don't approve of that at all. I especially don't approve of his nine-year-old brother playing. But what can I do? He seems to have no problem with it.
