What are some good jobs for a "heavy gamer"?
-
Hi, I would like to know some good jobs for a "heavy/hardcore gamer". I'm a heavy gamer and I do not plan to change when I get older. I would like to know any jobs that would fit with my desired lifestyle. Any jobs that include the following: -Not stressful or low stress -Easy job or relatively easy -Decent pay for a single guy to live well by himself -Do not interfere/interfere little with my passion(gaming) ***I AM NOT INTERESTED in Video Game Testing/Animation/Graphics/Programming Or Computer jobs*** Thank you for your help.

Hey man, I feel ya. I am 26 years old and I am seeking a way into the gaming industry myself. I personally would be happy being a video game tester, (making sure all of the kinks are worked out of a game to ensure the most enjoyable experience is a great responsibility that most people overlook), however it doesn't pay well for the most part. To be honest, the only thing I would suggest that you work for that would be up your ally, would be a video game reviewer. This can be stressful if working for a video game or entertainment rag, however, going independant in this kind of field is really difficult and almost impossible to pull off without some kind of established fanbase or editorial experience under your belt. You also need to 'keep up with the Jones' and get video games the day of release and review them as soon as possible ( this can be very expensive with the rising cost of games, these days). Your best bet, overall, is to start off working as a tester and get a degree in jouralism or just make your word known as being the best around amongst the industry. It takes time to become well known and trusted in the field, and you will have to claw your way up through the gutter to emerge on top. There is no easy way to acheive the goal you seek, but once it is acheived, you will be doing something that you love for the rest of your life. P.S. Get to the West Coast as soon as you can, there is basically no strong video game industry (development or publication) on the East Coast. -------------- To Tentoes: Congrats on the game going to IGF!

So you want a slacker job that still pays enough to support your gaming lifestyle? I'm sorry, but that's not possible. For one thing, living by yourself is expensive. By the time you figure out a budget and put money into your savings, you'll be left with very little "play money". Also, pay increases with the complexity of a job. Easy jobs give very little money. More complex jobs give lots of money. How old are you anyway?

Go flip burgers at McDonald's and live in Mommy and Daddy's basement. There is no such thing as a slacker job that pays well.....

If you are a hard core heavy gamer, why WOULDN'T you want a job in the related field? I work for a gaming company, and all the programmers here LOVE their job. They are passionate about it... and it shows in the quality of the games that are developed. When you do something that you love, it hardly feels like a job. You're actually getting paid to do something you love!! Not many people can sat that!! We currently have a game in development that is a finalist at IGF! www.axiomoverdrive.com

In the "REAL WORLD" the equation (Low Stress + Easy) = Good Pay DOES NOT EXIST. You better hope you win the lottery or else you will have your low stress job wearing a hair net.
