  • Answer:

Most reputable antique shops will give free valuations, even visiting your home for large items. Beware, don`t accept the first valuation, ask several for a true idea of their worth. good luck.

Hi. I am not sure where you live, but in this city an antique dealer will not evaluate an item for free unless they are interested in purchasing or consigning it. If they are interested in consigning it they will usually take a percentage of the sale. It they wish to purchase and item, they will most likely offer you 30% of what they will sell the item for. I have done that myself, that is the business. Here, the major and small auction houses have valuation days where you can bring an item or photo in and they will value it for you. You can also submit photos via their websites. For rare or very valuable items, that is also the best place to sell... they work on commission and want your piece to sell as high as possible...they work to do that. To figure out what you have for yourself, there are a couple of things you can do: Take photos of your items and join forums that specialize in that category. For instance, if you have an antique glass item, there are several excellent forums with glass experts as moderators, and they will help you identify your item. There is one here http://www.antique-information.com/antiquevalues.html You should also look for marks, signatures, labels, etc. Anything to help identify the item, if its pottery certain companies used certain colors, so that will narrow down your search. Furniture; different styles and feet or legs of a piece can help to date a piece. Look online or in antique resource books for the company that used your mark, learn a little about the company, then search for your piece or a similar one by the same maker on antique websites, and you will get a good idea of its retail value. If you list what you have I can provide you with excellent resources to look up marks and some helpful forums to join. You can submit pictures to maryanswers on www.maryantiques.com, we also help to identify items for free, usually one per person, with exceptions for registered members. We don't usually value items but will sometimes give the latest auction prices or a range. Good Luck! Hope I've helped a bit! ASK maryantiques ... Most antique dealers and auctions houses will give you a free valuation, however it will cost you to get a written insurance valuation.

It may sound nuts but if you try Ebay you might get a general idea...
