That depends. I just got through crocheting one that's sort of a tote using Sugar 'n' Cream cotton. If you want to crochet a wool one to felt, you'll need untreated pure wool (the wrapper will say "feltable"). If you want to crochet an evening purse, you'll need something like Vanna's Glamour.
