Sewing machine? what kind should I buy???
-
I want to buy a sewing machine. The thing is, I want something simple because it will be my first time sewing. Do you have any suggestions?

Answer:
I would recommend you going to a big store like Walmart or even a fabric store and watch for coupons on sales and by one for about $50.00. It will do straight stitches, zigzag and zippers. It will also do a lot of other stitches. For a first machine this will work out fine. The brand does not make much difference. Do not buy one at a yard sale because 90 per cent of them have the bobbin messed up or the tension beyond repair. You'll pay a lot more in the long run for repairs. You'll also get frustrated when it does not work well and might make you give up. As time goes by and you get better at sewing you can upgrade and pass the other machine on to someone else just learning.

Buy an older machine from a reputable dealer. When you have a problem, you can always go back and get help. You'll probably need some basic functions with zig-zag stitch for knits. Remember to have your machine serviced once a year! Good luck!

Get a Brother. They are inexpensive, well made and work horses. Make sure you get one with a one step buttonholer. Don't get a thrift shop model, when for less than $150, you can get a brand new Brother machine. Google Ken's sewing center in AL for some deals (no I'm not connected to them). I'm a professional seamstress and own two regular machines, three sergers, and an embroidery machine - all Brothers. Great starter machine! Good luck and have a ball sewing. There are sew many project to do and sew little time!!!

Do not go to Walmart, Juki is a good choice for a simple machine. There are some on ebay and good prices online. If not that go to Kenmore. The cheap machines at Walmart etc. are just that, Cheap and you can't get repairs etc. easily. With Juki, they hold up well and with Kenmore you do have easy access to repairs.

Kenmore from Sears has machines at a reasonable price and the more features they have, the more expensive they are. You need zig-zag and it would be beneficial if you get one that has a one step buttonholer. I have a Bernina I inherited from my mom in 1980 and it has never had a problem with it. You could try thrift shops, or buy one that has been reconditioned from a dealer. You should check out Consumer Reports to see what they have to say.

Wal-Mart has several machines that would do for starters. Singer is best brand to buy. I do not prefer Sears.
