Anyone has done T-shirt printing at home before?
-
Well, I have a long school break right now and hope to try out new and interesting home projects. My father suggested that I do T-shirt printing with his Epson Stylus Photo 2100 printer but I can't find any information online. Can any kind of printer be used for T-shirt printing or must it be modified or is there only a specific kind? Even so, without the correct printer, I am quite interested in trying out T-shirt printing and have read about stencil T-shirt, iron-on design and direct to garment printing. I am not sure which is the best way to start for a total novice like myself and hope to hear some suggestions and tips from anyone with experience? Also, what type of fabric ink should I use that is affordable and won't run (please include the brand name)? Recommending me good websites or video links would be much appreciated too as I am kind of overwhelmed by all the different ways when I was surfing the web for info. Thank you to anyone who reply.

Answer:
One of the reasons you're overwhelmed is that you're including a lot of different techniques in your searches, and each one is a craft/technique of its own. You'll do better by restricting your Google/etc or YouTube searches to a single craft, or at least do one of them at a time. (And any one of them could easily take up a whole vacation period!) If you want to try transfer paper (with your printer), be sure you know the difference between regular transfer papers and those "for dark fabrics." Both are applied with heat (usually a home iron), but the regular ones will create transfers that are transparent so must be used on a white background (or any light-colored background if you don't mind tinting the whole image with that color since it will show through). There's more on using transfer papers in my answer here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110921203059AAbBUQ7 If you're interested in screen printing though, that can also be done fairly easily unless you decide to get into the more complicated equipment and possibilities. Check out my answer in this question for more on that: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100221054858AAu525Y and http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AgUbQl7Hr0mSR1s7EJE2jg3ty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20111113060153AAugnpW You can also "stencil" without a screen, generally by using a "stenciling brush" which is stiff and round. http://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+stencil You can use various paints and inks, but for the simplest ones just start with a "fabric paint" (or make your own acrylic paints into fabric paints by mixing in some textile medium). Or for stenciling, there are thinner paints that can be purchased (right next to the brushes and stencils). All of those are *permanent* colorants so won't run/etc, but do wait a week at least before washing the first time and be sure and wash first to remove any sizing or softener in the fabric. I made a few in the last 2 years. All you need to do is make your image the way you want it to appear on the shirt & print it on t-shirt transfer paper which can be found at the craft store. No need to consult a website, just go to the craft store in the t-shirt aisle, get yourself a t-shirt (white is best) & the transfer paper should be right there. Read the directions (pretty easy to follow) and do the project. Before getting started, be sure to read & closely follow the directions that come with the transfer paper. You must first machine wash & dry the shirt, do NOT use fabric softener (is says this in the directions with the paper). Create the image you want to print then when you get ready to print, (Warning!! ) ***be sure you set your printing properties paper type to iron on transfer...or t-shirt transfer which ever the paper type listed says.*** It will then print your image reverse (as if looking in the mirror) on the paper then you carefully iron it on your shirt and it will appear as if you see it printed normal on paper (not reversed). I made t-shirts for my parents for Christmas showing a family tree with pictures that started with a picture of them from their 50th anniversary celebration, then pictures of each of us 6 children, then I had a line going from each of my siblings (those who are parents) to the next generation (grand kids) then the next generation (great grand kids). My parents love it!!! Have fun with your project!
