What kind of glue do I use for bubble charm jewelry?

How can I get into making jewelry without any fancy equipment?

  • For instance, I can't really get any fancy metal-working tools, though I'd still like to try making some metal jewelry. I was thinking that I could use wire, but do you have any other ideas? Would glue work, and if so what kind?

  • Answer:

I do metal smithing. All you need is an anvil (I use a section of polished rail road track bolted to a stump) and a polished ball-peen hammer. You should have some sort of heat source that will make your metal red to straw colored...you can make a simple forge with an old charcoal bar b-q and a hair dryer. There are a bunch of YouTube videos on the subject. Also, have a look at sand casting videos.

Basic wire work can be done with minimal tools, but if you want to do anything really cool, you're going to need some equipment--like a torch (for soldering). Micheal's sell some stamping stuff, but again, if you want to do anything serious, you will need "fancy equipment" and at least a couple of classes so that you can use it safely. Real jewelry does not use glue. EVER.

If you want to use metal as your primary material you could do that with only a few pieces of pretty inexpensive equipment and other materials (for pickling, etc). You could also use wire --alone, or to make into connectors for the metal pieces, or for "wrapping" other items, etc, etc. Regular glue isn't usually used for attaching metal pieces together but could perhaps be used for some... generally the joins are mechanical, or soldering/etc is used. I suggest you check out the metal-related forums of the Art Jewelry magazine for info, lessons, etc, and if you join (free) you can also ask questions: http://cs.jewelrymakingmagazines.com/bajcs/forums/maingroup.aspx?groupid=9 (scroll down to the *Making Jewelry* section...the first half of the sub-boards there should be in your ballpark)
