I want to make them to sell and have tried all plaster but they are so heavy. I'm making slices of cake as well so I thought foam with an outer of plaster or artex. Makers of these are so secretive on their recipes !!!

Answer:
I've used expandable foam for YEARS now... I buy it as a two-part mix by the gallon, but you can buy it in SPRAY cans at most home-centers. I just put it right into the cupcake-pan with the paper or foil liners. I then paint the top with a heavy latex paint, and mix a LIGHT plaster called "HYDROCAL" for the frosting. GOOD LUCK !!

I would think that newspaper pulp would make nice faux cakes and cup cakes. ****Ah yes found a recipe you really could even do this in regular cup cake pans.. muffins pans, bread pans... Some of your work may need to be sanded experiment have fun ********************************* Secret making plaster lighter by inducing gas...I have never done this...just me thinking which could be ahhhhh funny. no serious I am thinking this might be possible in your molds with expermintation. Recipe basic: baking soda, white distilled vinger and plaster of paris makes a lighter substance(Important NOTICE) this will foam like a valcano project so experminataion would be needed. If i can be of help let me know.

I've seen these done with styrofoam balls that were decorated with ribbon roses on top & placed inside cupcake liners........really pretty. You would need to slice the bottom off the ball so that it would sit flat. I don't know what you're decorating them with, but you could wrap the foam in plastic before using. There are also hard foam balls on the market in craft stores. If foam is not ideal, what about tennis balls or toys of that size? Good luck!

I have heard of making things like that using flour and some other things of which I don't know. They have made fake pies, etc. Then they bake it which would be good as you would have the baked look. Hopefully someone on here knows what that is or if not I will try to find the ingredients for you. e-mail me if you don't get the answer. EDIT:::: Here is the information I was talking about. http://www.craftown.com/instruction/dough.htm
