Are you into Scrapbooking?

I'm a beginner at scrapbooking! I need a fellow scrapbookers HELP!?

  • I am worried and concerned and I want to make sure I get my scrapbooking just right. Here are my questions: 1.) What kind of glue do I use for pictures? I bought this glue stick at walmart for scrapbooking but would it be safe for pictures? What should I look for when it comes to glue for scrapbooking? 2.) What papers should I NOT use for scrapbooking? I was thinking on using some paper I got from a friend and wallpaper samples I gathered with many patterns and putting the acid free paper behind the photo. Would this be ok? 3.) How can I crop photos? Can I use an exacto blade and ruler? Or scissors? I hardly have any money to buy a slicer to crop them. 4.) Any other tips of what to NOT do would be great. Also if you have any good websites that you use?

I have been scrapbooking for over 5 years now, so I hope this information helps. 1. DON'T use a glue stick. If you make a mistake with the picture or paper it will be impossible to get off and will most likely ruin your item. I would recommend the little squares of adhesive or a runner with the squares on it. Walmart sells it and it comes in a cardboard box and it comes out with blue backing on the back. These backings are a pain to take off since you need more than one so I would go for the runners. They come in one of those white out looking containers and are perfect size for scrapbooking. 2. DON"T use paper that doesn't say it is not acid and lignin free. You don't want it to start fading. Putting acid free paper behind the photo is perfect- you're on the right track 3. If you enjoy scrapbooking I would invest in a slicer- if not I know people that cut there photos and paper freehand, I prefer not to do this b/c it does not look that great. Below I will recommend a site that has tools that are not that expensive but again Walmart has a great selection for a beginning scrapbooker. 4. Don't get frustrated- it takes time so be patient. The final product will be beautiful and will last a lifetime if you take care of it. creativememories.com is a great source for all your scrapbooking needs. I have bought a lot of products from them and they are very reliable.

http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/cr_scrapbooking/0,2024,DIY_13776,00.html is the best site for scrapping info. As far as paper, just make sure it's acid free/lignin free... anthing sold in Michaels or AC Moore, etc in the scrapbooking section will be perfect. For glue, try a few different kinds, everyone has their preferences. I like the "Zig 2-way Glue". It can be either permanent or repositional depending on how you use it. Check out that site, and Good Luck!

PLEASE don't use a glue stick!!! It will warp your paper and photos. I use the TOMBOW Tape runner, you can get refills at AC Moore or Mike's pretty cheap with a coupon. Go to ACMoore.com for their current coupon. Save up for the slicer (paper cutter), it is well worth the cost!

I have been scrapbooking for years and have always used glue-stick. I use acid-free of course but the trick is to use only little smudges of it on the corners, that way, I can easily take the pictures out if I want to. The best piece of advice I can give you is just make sure the paper you use is acid free and you don't have to crop photos, find stencils made for scrapbooking that are shaped for photographs and place it over your picture. for example a circle, smaller if you want to just use a small part of your picture, then figure out where you want it on your page. Next use the stencil and an exacto knife to cut the circle out of your patterned or designed paper. Position your picture underneath the paper. the rest of the picture that you wanted cropped is hidden. This saves your picture. I take a white piece of paper(or cardstock) as big as my scrapbook paper, then I take my scrapbook paper I cut my holes out of and lay it on top. then I glue stick along the bottom so they are attached along the bottom. then I put my picture on the white paper and position it to where it will look good out the hole I made then glue stick the picture down to the white paper. since I only attached my patterned paper along the bottom, I can easily add more pictures to all of the holes (frames) I made. It ends up being kinda like a picture frame matting that has multiple holes for photographs. after I'm done, I glue along all the edges to fix the scrapbook paper to the blank paper. I usually use sheets of cardstock because it's sturdier. I If you dont have much money, I highly recommend using an exacto knife (use a new sharp blade) and a ruler to cut out your "frames" or holes in the paper. Or if you are skilled enough, take some cardboard sheets or really heavy cardstock, and make your own stencils like hearts, clouds circles (use cup for perfect circle) stars, diamonds, teardrops, etc. If you keep care of them, you can use them over and over again.

Stop with the Glue Stick. I use Creative Memories tape runner. You barely have to use any and it sticks very very well. All other tape runners I've used lead to the pic eventually falling off. NO WALL PAPER. Only use paper that is label ACID FREE LIGNIN FREE. You'll find it in the scrapbooking sections of stores. I'm sure that the walpaper adhesive contains something that'd be harmful to your pics. If you can't afford a slicer, then your exacto and a metal straight edge are the best choices. If you're interested in Creative Memories options, email me at [email protected] and I'll email you the site for a consultant. You cannot buy CM products in stores.
