How many rows and columns of holes are on a tapestry canvas the size of a sheet of A4 paper?

I have a cartoon picture that my kids want to try to turn into tapestry. I don't know much about tapestry design, but if I can transform a bitmap image(or something else someone suggests) into the amount of holes on a canvas I should be able to convert the picture so it can be reproduced with tapestry.

Try using a free demo software for cross stitch there is normally a selection for tapestry. http://dpsoftware.com or http://easycross.co.uk this has the option as this is the one I use.

the number of holes per inch varies on aida I dont know about plastic canvas.I find the easiest aida(that is what the canvas is called) is 14 (14 holes per inch) as I am a beginner at this.I go to my local wool shop for advice as they sell the aida and threads and are very helpful.This is for cross stitch but there are other types of tapestry stitches.Hope this helps.
