The edges of the blanket I'm crocheting are uneven?
-
One edge is completely straight, the other is uneven. Sometimes its bigger and sometimes its smaller. I'm crocheting a good sized blanket with a lot of stitches in each row and I don't really know how I'm supposed to count as I'm going with so many stitches and plus distractions sometimes. I've tried measuring, but it seems even at first then as I get farther along I notice it actually wasn't. My crocheting is very good besides this, and I'm using the correct hook for the yarn I'm using. Any tips to make sure its even? I'm double crocheting, and I know I'm doing it correctly, I just have problems with the edges being even and straight.

Answer:
1. When you finish a row, count the stitches. If you have the correct count, keep going. Otherwise, go back to where you added or subtracted a stitch and fix it. 2. If you're working a complicated pattern with shells or something similar, count the patterns in each row. Again, if it's correct, keep crocheting. Otherwise, fix it. 3. Make sure you crochet all the way to the edge on each row. 4. If the edge is a real problem, you may want to pull out the work and start over. Otherwise, you can crochet a border around the blanket that will help even it up. Pick an edging you like and add it when you finish the blanket.

The advise you just received from Miz T is correct. However, if the blanket is truly large then counting each row can be quite annoying. One way you can count faster is to use "stitch markers" every 10 stitches. Another method is to check the shape by folding the blanket very carefully every 2 rows. If it just won't fold even, something is wrong. Mostly it is because people sometimes miss the very last stitch and don't realize it. Sometimes the first stitch. Folding works quite well, however I too just finished a baby blanket and for the life of me can't figure out why the one corner wants to "hang out" beyond everything else by about 8 INCHES. Horrid! 44 years experience, I've never had this happen, especially with a basic double crochet stitch, In a square from the center. The corners, line up. The stitch count is EXACTLY the same on each side. Just and H hook and some blue and white KW weight yarn. How much simpler one can get I don't know. But it just won't go straight. I've taken it out ENTIRELY twice. No go. So, if you use markers, count, fold, measure AND put a border and it's STILL crocked, just use the yarn to make some scarves and hats and try again with some other yarn.
