How to sell handmade crafts?

  • I crochet. I've made scarfs, pillows, blankets, small purses/ carring bags, a small coin purse, ahd some shawls. any ideas of how to sell the stuff. i would also maybe like some ideas of what to crochet. I'm also into sewing. Any sewing ideas? I would do a yard sale but i really don't have much to sell.

    Hi I have been making and selling my textile crafts for many years and the best results have come from having home parties or home craft sales. For the parties you invite all your friends, ask them to bring one friend with them. For home craft sales I would put small posters around my local shops, by putting leaflets in surrounding nieghbour's letter boxes and a small ad in the local free ad paper. Make it an all day open sale, give yourself time for lunch and stay open a couple of hours in the evening for thos who cannot make it during the day. I have made a lot of money this way, and people know that you are there, and I have now had orders for birthday presents and for general gifts throughout the year. There is little outlay and you are in the comfort of your own home. Good luck PS I have many ideas for small gifts that you could make. If you don't have a lot to sell find a crafter friend who makes items a little different to yours who could share a stall at a local market or fair. Halves the table hire too. Make a variety of items in different colours, sizes and price ranges. Always offer quality made items and try to make things not available elsewhere. It's great to sell a really special item at a good price - but you'll find that many people don't understand the time taken to make hand crafted things and so don't like paying big prices for them. If you can make things quick and economically you can afford to sell them at a lower cost. I find that I can never charge for my time and simply take the cost of the materials and multiply it by 5 (or thereabouts). One more point - the best sales prospects are at craft fairs/markets etc. rather than flea markets or swap meets. Garage/yard sales are too much hard work for little return - everyone wants stuff for nothing!! Good luck. Hope this helps.

Look for local craft shows, flea markets, or if you've got enough, shop them around to local boutiques to sell on commission.

Warning : Don't make any children's products if you are in the US. A new law was passed last year & goes into effect on Feb. 10 banning the sale of any children's items that have not been tested for lead and like 3 plastic additives. There was no exception made for handmade stuff. Read up on it at Etsy.com for more info. At this point in time, secondhand stores are going to have to throw away all used children's books, clothes & toys, because they haven't been tested. Any small business that deals in kid's stuff is basically going out of business Feb. 10. I (used to) sew doll clothes & sell them at craft shows. The little shows at churches & schools seem to do best - good attendance and the spaces are a lot less expensive than bigger shows. Go to craftlister.com and sign up for their email alerts & you will get a listing for 2 months ahead what shows are in your area.
