How To Knit With A Knitting Board?

KNITTING - Does anyone know how to knit this?

  • Im wondering what stitch they used to knit this headband? I'd like to make it myself, but am just using the ribbing stitch. The ends on mine do not look as neat and tidy as they do here. HELP! http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=22556120&color=035&itemdescription=true&navAction=jump&search=true&isProduct=true&parentid=W_ACC_HATS the headband is called "wooden ships ear warmer" and it's on the urban outfitters site if this link doesn't work I'm just a beginner and don't really know very much about knitting. It looks like one side of this has been knit but the other side is looks like the ribbing stitch. How did they do that? Also how are the edges knit? they look so tidy (check out the link)

  • Answer:

Interesting headband. The body clearly is knit in stockinette stitch. The turned-back "hem" or border on the top and bottom does look like ribbing, but I think it's something else. I think it's done by slipping the first 2 stitches on each row without knitting them. It could be that the first 3 stitches on each row are slipped, but I think it's 2. I tried it, knitting a sample 12 stitches wide and slipping the first 2 stitches on each row. The sides turned in and formed a "hem" on each side. Stockinette tends to curl inward on the sides anyway, and my (admitted tiny) sample didn't do that, but the "hems" laid flat on each edge. To make the headband, you'd want to cast on enough stitches to make a band 4" wide plus 4 stitches. Knit those stitches until you have your head circumference minus 1". Bind off and stitch the edges together. Then gather up the seam to about 2-1/2" width. Knit a strip 4 or 5 stitches wide and about 5-1/2" long. Wrap it around the gathered seam on the headband and stitch.

The "edges" look tidy because you really can't see them! This is knit as a tube -- or knit flat and folded and sewn together to make a tube -- and then has the ends sewn together. It's done in stockinette stitch, where you knit one row and purl the next if you're working flat. Knit a piece that is about 4" wide and long enough to go around your head. Knit one row and purl the next until you're done. Fold it in half longwise, and sew the side seam. Turn it right-side out, and sew the ends together. Then, knit a small piece about 3.5" long and 2" wide. This is the little piece that goes vertically around the band. Fold it in half longwise and sew the seam. Wrap it around the band and sew the ends shut. It's best if you position it over the joining seam on the band.
