How To Knit With A Knitting Board?

Trying to knit an afghan for the first time...confused?

  • First of all, I have a 28in knitting board. When I read the directions it says that the afghan will be 44in x 70in. I don't understand how a 28in knitting board and produce a 44in wide afghan when it specifically says 'knit in one piece'. I'm using the yarn recommended in the book, Lion Brand Homespun. I have already cast on, but that's it. The yarn is very hard to use because it feels like it isn't sturdy enough. Should I pull it tighter when wrapping it around? This is what my knitting board looks like: http://www.knittingboard.com/28_Knitting_board_p/kb28.htm This is the first time I'm attempting to make an afghan so I have almost no idea what it's supposed to look like as I continue to work on it. Any techniques/advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Answer:

The board is 28in wide but it has 84 pegs. The width of knitting achieved depends on the thickness of the yarn and the number of pegs not the width of the pegs. Your link says that you can get a piece of fabric up to 45in wide which would need very thick yarn indeed but if that is what it says then presumably they have made a piece of fabric that wide.
