How do you make homemade lye?

How do I make soap without using lye?

  • My friend and I want to make soap as a Christmas gift for our friends, but all of the recipes we've found call for lye, which is apparently pretty dangerous stuff, and we don't want to use it.

  • Answer:

You need to buy melt & pour soap try www.libertynatural.com They have several melt and pour soaps & essential oils to scent your soap with.

the only way to make soap with out lye is to use a pre-made base, lye was used to make it, its safe now. Go to Micheals or Hobby Lobby or possibly JoAnne's Crafts and look for melt and pour soap. You can purchase this and melt it down add your scents, colors and anything else you like and pour into soap molds or candy molds of your choice, let harden, pop out wrap and gift. This can be done in one day.

You can't and the lye really isn't that dangerous. If you get some of the lye/water solution on you simply rinse well with vinegar to neutralize the lye. Same if you spill it on anything. Can it burn you? Yes but if you use proper precautions it is quite safe to use. With just 3 days to Christmas I would also recommend Melt & Pour which is available from Michaels. After Christmas it really is worth the time to learn how to make soap with lye. Join one of the soapmaking forums such as http://soapmakingforum.com/forum/index.php. Everyone there is really helpful and will help guide you through the process. By learning Cold Process you can make Milk & Honey Soaps as well as anything else your heart could desire. Good Luck!

you can't! and lye is actually the outcome of mixing the beginning products. lye isn't dangerous: the stuff before is. and it's only dangerous if it gets in your eyes, mouth, etc. if it gets on your hands, you'll notice. it doesn't hurt too bad. just scrub with water. :D

BLAH.

It's a little late to make soap for Christmas! Or are you talking about next year? It takes several months for the soap to cure, and it won't be ready in time for this year. You can't make soap without lye -- that's just the way it is. While it can be dangerous, if you take the necessary precautions and know what you are doing, nothing will happen. However, it's not as easy as it sounds. I would recommend that you take a class in soap-making (many centres have them) where someone that has experience can help you along. It can be scary when doing it for the first time. What you can do is make up soap from left-overs. Those little flat thin pieces that are left should be saved, and then melted down, and made into new shapes. It's a lot easier this way, and less dangerous (but hot soap can still burn your skin).
