How do I become a KID model?

What happened to model kits?

  • While Lego and other building sets are still popular, model kits seem to have gone underground. I recall when Toys R Us had a whole aisle of kits, even Walmart and Kmart carried them. Now one has to go to an actual hobby shop to find them and the prices are ridiculous. Why is it folks will buy Lego, but not a model kit? Is it simply the glue / paint work involved? If so, why aren't snap together kits popular? Have people lost patience for such a hobby and are more wrapped up in video games and such? I've enjoyed building model kits since I was a kid, but I get the idea they've become this pricey adult hobby as opposed to something that was fun.

Well, as to NEW modelers, I hear alot of complaints as to the cost. Of course there is also the competition from the "new" things: video-games. I suppose "kids" just want to PLAY rather than use their heads and hands. RanaBana also has a good point... the desire and need for "instant gratification". I remember getting MY first model kit back in 1974... about 20 years after the products came on the market. I remember going to "Kiddie-World" (our local equivalent to Toys R Us) and buying kits for between $5 and $10. NOW I cringe when I lay out $100 to $200 for a kit... but I do it anyway. I completed over 1500 kits in 35+ years, and have about 30 of them on display here in the house (NOT counting my Model Railroad), and donated a good dozen to Navy and Air Force recruiters. I STILL have another dozen waiting in a closet to be built or completed.

Kids today want instant gratification. They have no attention spans due to video games and computers. As the interest in model kits frays, they get harder to find. My husband has a few kits that have been collecting dust for years, he bought them hoping it could be something for he and our son to do together, but the boy insisted on K'Nex and Lego instead. Put it together in an hour, play with it, take it apart and make something else....instant gratification. *shrug*
