How can I make JAXB-generated classes participate in a visitor pattern?

I want to make a simple sewing pattern myself. How do I do it?

  • I want to make a parrot cage cover, which will be made of two LARGE squares each with a rounded top (the front and back of the cage), and a long strip which attaches the two bits together. I think I might need a front flap too for where the cage door is. The thing is, I have never made anything before, and I am worried that it might be all lumpy and badly made and cost me a lot of money and be hard to make. In theory they are simple shapes, but I have no idea of how to make a pattern and to make the seams line up nicely so the whole thing hangs straight. I'm thinking I should try and trace the front of the cage to make a pattern. I don't know what to do next. Do I tack it or what? How to I keep the lines straight or know where to sew them together? Do I need chalk? I do not have a sewing machine, and I'm not getting one just for this. I don't want to buy a lot of material and to make a mess of it. The material will be very heavy because light is not supposed to get through it. Will that cause a problem re. sewing? I would buy a cover but they are REALLY expensive (I've tried Ebay too etc.) and the local dress makers refused to help ... They only do clothes, apparently.

  • Answer:

Start with measuring the cage's dimensions. Tracing will only give you an inaccurate pattern. Then cut out the pattern in paper, newspaper will work for a one time use pattern. When you cut out the pattern pieces make then 1/4 to 1/2 inch larger all the way around to allow for the seams. Then take your pattern pieces and pin them together one the seam line with the seams on the outside, see if it fits on the cage properly, This will allow you to adjust the pattern if necessary. Once you've got it fitting the way you want, then cut out the fabric. Since you do not have a sewing machine, you can buy fusible bonding web/tape at a fabric store. This allows you to make the seams by simply ironing on the tape. read the directions, You can also use it for the hem on the bottom of the cover.

EDITED TO ADD: If you don't know how to sew, the first projects you do almost always are not things you want to be seen in public: wobbly seams, offgrain fabric, crooked stitching, often stretched out fabric from places you've had to rip out and sew again. Someone who has gotten through that stage can do a much more professional looking job. No, the "handheld" and "mini" sewing machines don't work well or for long... basically a waste of money. Heavy fabrics (how do you propose for the bird(s) to get air?) will make sewing more difficult, either by hand or by machine. ----- Use newspaper to make a mockup of the pattern over the cage. Staple the pieces together -- those will be your seamlines -- and then make sure you can put the cover on and off the cage. Then take the pattern and a photo of the cage and your fabric to someone who knows how to sew to have it made up. What you're making is basically a toaster cover, just different proportions: http://www.myhomemadehappy.com/?p=55 http://sewing.about.com/library/weekly/aa011801d.htm

Without a sewing machine and having to use material that will completely block the light, my only suggestion would be to get a lightweight vinyl tablecloth to drape over the cage. If you want to customize it, you can cut it and glue the pieces together with a glue gun. To make a pattern, I would use either newspaper for square pieces (tape together pieces) or and old flat sheet that you can pin together then cut to make a pattern. You can also cut the table cloth and glue in Velcro pieces so that you can have a flap to get into the cage and/or for ventilation. Best place to buy the vinyl tablecloths are WalMart, Target or Target. They are very reasonable cost and are durable,
