Answer:
I have a really easy and fun time crocheting, I explain my way of handling the yarn or thread and the hook as freehand [ a freehand crocheter, I have seen other on the computer do very near to all I do ], some crocheters hold the hook as a pencil, that is a limited method of crochet for me, [ I hold my hook as I would hold spatula ]. My hand is like around the hook and I am right handed. On my left hand I hold the yarn or thread so it gives me plenty of freedom and ease in crocheting really fast, yarn or thread is just under ring and middle finger and brought over index with thumb holding it on the end of the middle finger as work area, I pinch a loop in yarn, insert hook front to back through the pinched loop, yarn over hook back to front to draw a loop through pinched loop, yarn over hook [ yo, from back to the front ], and draw a loop through the loop on hook, pull yarn end to tighten slip knot loop around hook, repeat yarn over [ yo ] hook and draw a loop through the loop [ lp ] on the hook for each chain stitch [ ch or ch st ], on the foundation to number of chain stitches needed. The basic stitch are now slip stitch [ sl st, insert hook in stitch, yo, draw loop through stitch and loop [ lp ] on hook]. Single crochet [ sc, insert hook in stitch, yo, draw a loop through stitch, yo, draw a loop through 2 loops on hook ]. Half double crochet [ hdc, yo, insert hook in st, yo, draw a loop through st, yo, draw off 3 loops ]. Double crochet [ dc work same as hdc to 3 loops om hook, yo, draw off 2 loops twice ]. Triple or treble crochet [ tr, yarn over hook twice, insert hook in stitch, draw a lp through, 4 lps on hook, yo, take off 2 lps, 3 times ]. Double triple or treble [ dtr, 3 lps over hook, draw lp from st, 5 lps on hook, yo, draw off 2 lps, 4 times ] and learning abbreviations is very important.

Have you looked in the book yet? I would expect the book she gave you has instructions for crocheting in many differenet stitches. Even a small pamplet can have a lot of information about how to begin, and detailed photos of how to start crocheting. I suspect your mom just wants to see you apply yourself to something constructive. It's only Monday now so this should be pretty easy to do what she has asked of you. There are some pretty cool things you can make too, not just blankets. Once you get started, pick out something you would like to make for yourself or a friend, and make it your goal to create at least one item. That is why I added the link to JP fun, they have pictures of so many things you could make there, and they give away a free pattern every day. I'm pretty new at crocheting myself, I used to do it but life got busy and I quit. Now I'm relearning it all over again, and have a long list of things I want to make once I finish the project I'm on, it's almost finished. Just have fun with it, and think of some neat things you could make out of yarn. Here are some helpful links I have found http://www.crochet911.com/crochet911.html#c13 http://crochet.about.com/ http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/instruction_directory.php http://www.jpfun.com/ hope this helps,
Rachel
Books on crocheting make it fairly easy. Just follow the pattern and you're on your way to a hobby that will bring you much enjoyment over the years. Good luck. And if you get stuck, consider asking your mom for help.
