Answer:
After you get through your first sewing course, you should consider learning the techniques used in ready to wear sewing. It'll make a big difference to your earnings if you learn to put in a zipper in five minutes, no pins, instead of a half an hour of slaving over the same thing with home sewing methods, or if you can make a lined vest in 45 minutes instead of 4 or 5 hours, or set a sleeve without pins. The two places this sort of information is readily accessible is in Connie Crawford's Guide to Fashion Sewing, which is a textbook written for her beginning sewing students at FIDM, and Margaret Islander's series of videotapes and DVDs of ready to wear techniques adapted for home sewing machines. You will also have to learn to press very well -- there, the best I've found are Cecelia Podolak's video, Fearless Pressing, and Mary Roehr's pressing video. Crawford also has two new DVDs out later this month (or maybe next) -- one on basic sewing, starting with threading the machine, and the other on fitting. These complement the earlier ones on custom bodice, custom pants, and custom dressform. And for slightly more advanced work, you probably want Judy Barlup's Japanese Tailoring -- these are fast techniques for tailoring adapted from Japanese manufacturing techniques. You'll probably also want to start reading Kathleen Fasanella's Fashion-Incubator blog, and the quiltropolis group "Sew Biz" http://www.fashionpatterns.com/books.html#FashionSewing (this is a Fairchild Press book -- you may be able to find it used) https://islandersewing.hostasaurus.com/Islander2005/product.php?dept_id=V http://www.fashionpatterns.com/ http://www.fashionpatterns.com/NEW_DVD_Series.html http://www.ceceliapodolak.com/book.html http://www.maryroehr.com/pressing-to-perfection.html http://uniquetechniques.com/shopbooks/shopbooks.html http://fashion-incubator.com/mt/ http://lyris.quiltropolis.com/scripts/lyris.pl?enter=sewbiz

If you are going to be a seamstress you need to take classes. Check out your local community college. I only get my sewing machines at sewing stores. They give free lessons on the machine you buy. I have also have gone to sewing conventions and taking classes there.

You have several options: 1. Buy a machine and try to teach yourself. This can be frustrating though. 2. Contact the local community college and see if they offer any evening classes. 3. Post an ad on Craigs List asking for sewing lessons. 4. If you buy an expensive machine, a lot of times the shops offer free lessons. 5. Ask around. Friends? Family? Family of friends? Friends of family? Do any of them know how to sew. I applaud you for wanting to learn! Good for you! Just remember, like anything else. Practice makes perfect. Don't be hard on yourself while you're learning. I've been sewing for WELL over 20 years professionally and I still make mistakes. Have fun with it! Good luck!

Hi, I dont meen to sound rude, but knowing how to sew and to use your machine is vital if you wanna be a dressmaker! I work as a dressmaker, have many years of experience and still find that people bring me items I am not sure what to do with. And not to talk about the machine, I had problems the other day, and I have used the same machine for years. If you really want to do this, find a course, like an adults learner group or something similar. Once you've mastered the basics there are specialist courses doing corsetry etc. Michelle Pye for example. Good luck, and I hope I dint discourage you too much! we need more dressmakers!

Look in the phone book under whatever make of sewing machine that you have..like if it's a Singer, look under Sewing machines and then Singer Distributors. Give that store a call and see if they have classes on their sewing machine. Several of the craft stores like Jo Ann's, Hobby Lobby etc offer all sorts of classes throughout the month...see if any will help you or call the stores and see if they'll set up a class. Check the town you live in. Call the village hall, the library and see if there are any classes offered by any groups in the area.. Check the Internet for sewing guilds and join some groups. Check the local paper for seamstresses and call them and ask them for ideas. They might even offer some sort of apprenticeship for you. Good luck

if there isn't any kind of instruction booklet in the box of a sewing machine that you have, then you would probably need to go to the library, and ask for books on that sort of thing.

well the way i learned was to just teach myself throug trial and error. i dont really understand why you would plan to get a job doing something you have no clue how to do, though.

Deb is right about taking a course. You learn tricks of the trade and tailoring for a professional look rather than "homemade".
