How do I make a sewing pattern for a stuffed animal into a larger pattern for a larger stuffed animal?
-
Im trying to make a little valentines day present for someone. I have never really done much sewing, and i realize this may be difficult but Im pretty sure I can do it. Now, i have the pattern for a small stuffed horse. I want to make a much bigger version of this. Whats the best way to go about altering the pattern? Im assuming since we arent working with clothing, and instead are working on the pattern for a 3 dimensional static object that just scaling the pattern up would be sufficient. whats the best way to go about this?

Answer:
If you want to enlarge de final product ( the horse) you must to enlarge every part of it.See the example of a football ball. It is generally made of several five-sided pieces. If you enlarge every piece you'll have the ball enlarged too. If you don't mention how is the size of the final horse, don't worry about. The simplest way in enlarging is when we draw several lines from the center of the small piece ( of cloth or leather) and trace the outline "parallel" to the small piece. The distance of the outline to the small piece may vary, and this will give the increase of the piece you'll sew later. Make some trials before in order to avoid your horse turn in a "big or undesirable one". Other way is use a projector/ screen.

The horse may be 3-D when finished -but the pattern itself is still flat and pieces that comprise the horse are 2-D and they can be scaled up in the way all 2-D patterns and shapes are enlarged. The first method is by using a photocopier with an enlarge feature, scan each piece, enlarge the percentage that you need and you will have a pattern the size you want. If that's not feasible then use the tried and true grid method that been used for centuries by craftspeople all over the world. Draw a grid on each pattern piece -or draw a grid on transparent plastic sheet and place it over the pattern piece. You can buy transparent sheets at craft stores. Next draw a grid on a sheet of blank paper that's sufficiently larger than the grid on the pattern. Now transfer the old piece to the new larger grid. Here's how it's done: http://weefolkart.com/content/reducing-and-enlarging-patterns-aka-thinking-outside-block Here's a simple explanation PDF: http://www.dollstreetdreamers.com/back_alley_articles/enlarging_patterns.pdf here's a video demonstration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zVm43eZDrI http://www.wikihow.com/Enlarge-a-Square-Grid-Sewing-Pattern-from-a-Book Using this method you can make your horse life sized, kid sized, or giant sized, depending on the size of your grid. It been used by tailors and dressmakers for centuries and it will work for your horse pattern.

A pattern can be made slightly bigger by an inexperienced sewer but to make it much bigger requires a knowledge of pattern drafting. It isn't just a matter of scaling up. The proportions of an bigger horse are different to those of a smaller horse. For example the legs may be twice as long but the head wouldn't be twice as big. To explain what I mean imagine 2 ladies the same height but one is very fat and the other is very slim. They would obviously take a different dress size. However some measurements wouldn't change very much. Their wrist, ankle and neck size would remain the same, no matter how much weight they gained.
