Does anyone have any ideas for crafts for my 13-year old to make and sell for a school project?
-
My daughter is 13 and is required to come up with a "store" where she and a friend will sell crafts or merchandise to other kids her age for a school project. The project is to teach them how to manage money, a business, and of course profit making. They have some ideas such as decorating notebooks, pencils, soap making, and magnets. The problem, is what can they do to decorate the notebooks and magnets so that they sell? ( I am supposed to help with this too, and I'm not sure about the notebook thing). Does anyone have any ideas on how to make a notebook appealing to a 13-year old? Does anyone have any ideas for crafts which would sell for that age group that is also not expensive to make since they need to make a profit and they can't charge a lot of money? Any help would be great!!!! Thanks!

Hey, I am really into crafts, so here's a few suggestions... Why not try some Fimo modelling material? It's easy for them to shape and mould, comes in loads of colours, and then you bake it in the oven (it is so easy, i promise), then they could use little motifs to decorate notebooks, or glue little magnets or badge pins on the back. They could make literally anything, as it's just modelling clay... They could do pencil toppers from the same material too, so you could just buy several blocks of Fimo. They could make quite a good profit, I reckon, and still keep the costs down. There is also air-drying white clay available which is cheaper but would need painting, so more time consuming.. They could also use fabric and ribbon to decorate notebooks, and even sequins too. Why not get them to have a little look round some card/gift shops for some inspiration. When I did this project at my school many years ago, I made jewellery and earrings with wire and beads, so there's another idea. I think notebooks is quite a good idea, maybe do some notebooks and some pencils with toppers, to have a stationery theme? Hope this helps..

Instead of making products to sell they could sell "kits" which have the pens/notebooks etc so each person who buys one can decorate it themselves. They could do that with several different projects by putting all the supplies in a zip lock bag or cute fancy bags.

What about braided or crocheted bracelets? You can make them in different colors & widths. You can also sew beads onto them. I would also suggest possibly looking into a charity or some other non-profit organization that you could possibly offer part of the money. Both adults & kids like to think their money will be doing some good. Maybe you could even use some of the profits for a school dance or party. Kids would like buying things that in the long run would also give them something else in the long run. Along with the braided or crocheted bracelets you can also make key chains & necklaces. Girls would also be interested in buying anklets. Winter is coming so if you do have some crocheters you can also make scarves. As for the book covers, if you have some crocheters you can crochet some book covers. If you have ever seen those stretchable book covers thats the type of thing you could crochet. Braided & crocheted belts are good too. Why stick with just 1 item when you can make a few items using the same method?

Since halloween is coming up, maybe a project that involves candy also, maybe you could look in the craft section of wal-mart, or hobby lobby/Michaels one of those places for some craft ideas as well. For my sorority we made picture frames for a high school near by and they see at walmart for like 75 cents a piece . Ya'll could sell for $1.00-2.00 to profit

I would suggest having the kids make and sell salt dough ornies. At 13 the kids are old enough to use the oven with supervision. Simply find a salt dough recipe, mix, roll out with a rolling pin and cut out various shapes using cookie cutters. Make sure you put a small hole in the top so these ornies can be hung. People use them on feather trees, hang them from peg shelves, also use them as fixins in a bowl. These ornies can be painted or coffee stained. Add rafia or homespun to hang. I live in Minnesota, and we sell a ton of these at craft shows. Very inexpensive to make with a high profit margin. Hope this helps.

I did mini enterprise when I was at school! for the pencils why not use fimo to make animals, characters, etc and push a hole in the them with the top of the pencil before putting the models in the oven. when ready and cool push them onto the top of the pencils using a little glue to secure and voila! personalised pencils for happy children! I saw it in a craft book I had when i was a kid. looked good!

Beaded bracelets. Nice ones, not plastic pony bead junk. Glass beads on either elastic or jewelry wire. Like this (this just the first thing I found online. Joanns has a gazillion beads to choose from) http://www.beallsflorida.com/page?name=page-department-style&styleid=86759&cm_mmc=CI-_-CSE-_-CSE-_-CSE&srccode=cii_10043468&cpncode=07-33109359-2 For this age group, macramed hemp bracelets (with a couple silver or tuquoise beads woven in) like this http://familyfun.go.com/arts-and-crafts/cutpaste/feature/famf88campcrafts/famf88campcrafts4.html or even better this http://www.makingfriends.com/jewelry/macrame.htm Beaded pends like this: http://www.craftbits.com/viewProject.do?projectID=347 Don't forget about something the boys might buy. Hmm, not owning a crafting aged child of that gender, I'm at a loss but I'll think about it. Also can you sell to teachers? Something like these chocolate covered spoons might be be sellable to teachers: http://www.craftbits.com/viewProject.do?projectID=112
