What would be a good gift for a sewing teacher?
-
I started taking sewing lessons with a woman last year. She has been so nice and generous, plus I've learned a lot. Her birthday is coming up next month so I want to get her a gift. She already has an entire library of sewing/quilting books and patterns, so I don't think she needs any more of those. And it can't be anything too expensive (like a brand new sewing machine, of course). What would be a nice gift for her?

Answer:
Gift certificate to her favorite fabric store or place where she buys sewing supplies. Does she draft patterns? If so, both of the "Pattern Magic" titles were recently released in English (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=ntt_athr_dp_sr_1?_encoding=UTF8&sort=relevancerank&search-alias=books&field-author=Nakamichi%20Tomoko A letter telling her what your lessons mean to you.

I would prefer a nice floral arrangement from ProFlowers delivered to my home. They have the longest lasting selection I have ever received. Another favorite is the Visa gift card as I can use it anywhere, even online. And, you can go online to keep track of your purchases and balance. The one I received 12/10 expires 2019!

If you have a sense of what their personal/financial situation is, it can be an easier choice. Some of the women I know who teach sewing do so to make ends meet because finances are tight, and they would REALLY appreciate gift cards to suppliers of basics - phone cards, local grocery and general-merchandise stores like K-Mart, Target, Walmart, value-priced supermarket chains, etc., or even pet food/supply stores if they have pets. Others just love sewing, love to share their passion, and don't have pressing financial needs. For them, I'd recommend some kind of 'consumable' - gift certificates to popular local restaurants, an assortment of their favorite threads or needles, a certificate for scissor-sharpening or sewing-machine servicing, and of course, gift cards to JoAnn's, Hobby Lobby, or whatever sewing-supply store she prefers. She may also appreciate gifts based on other special talents you have - house or garden plants, pet grooming, special meals/dishes, etc. If in doubt, go with cash or gift cards - some people feel they're impersonal, but most people LOVE to get them if they're general enough. Such a sweet thought!

Does she have a little carrying case for her things? Also look around and see if you can find stacked plastic {clear} boxes so she can put some of her things in it that she has laying around and can mark the case. Little glass bottles to put her pins and needles in. This is all I can think of right at the moment, but if you get any of these things and she mentions how much she has needed something like that, offer some of your time to help her organize things.

A gift card to JoAnns, Hobby Lobby, or any sewing/fabric store. An antique pattern tracer and wooden spool... things she could display. Something you made like a throw pillow or sachet or apron, etc. Flowers, plants (depends on whether she enjoys gardening). A referral, another student she can teach.

Thread, cloth, sewing needles? Choose something that would be useful... Like, you should sew something for her!

I got one of these: http://www.ediblearrangements.ca/ and enjoyed sharing it with the class and keeping the container and the little "thank you" teddy bear after. I like smaller things that don't take up lots of shelf space and remind me of a special person or event or whatever.
