Simple crocheting?

Knitting and crocheting. Help ?

  • so i've been knitting since last august and i think its pretty easy but i'm not really interested in making sweaters or blankets, or things that would be easier with knitting. i like making little things like cases and hats and such. should i take up crocheting too? i think i might like crocheting better because i would rather use one tool instead of two and i find knitting in the round hard.

  • Answer:

Knitting and crochet can be combined to make the most beautiful items you can imagine. crochet is faster. A crochet project typically takes about one third of the time that the same knitting project will.Crochet allows for open design (in other words, lots of lacy details) in a much more varied way than knitting does, especially for beginners. These are the designs that can stop people in their tracks to admire your work. While learning crochet, one learns many ideas from numerous great crocheters, and he will start to make their techniques his own. Individuals that hate patterns and have a desire to design find that crochet is much more amenable to that. It can certainly be done with knitting, but it will take a bit more time. but Crochet is a yarn-gobbler.Most people say that crochet is easier than knit. This is debatable. two crafts are different and depending on who is comfortable with which prefers it.

It wouldn't hurt to take up crocheting. I do both and I find I like some of the crochet textures better than knitting and vice versa. Some knitters struggle with crochet, I find crochet to be harder. Some crocheters have a harder time with knitting, I know a few lol. And then others have no problem with either. It will be hard to say whether or not one would be easier to be honest. http://www.ravelry.com is a great community for knitters and crocheters. You can track all your own projects, needles, yarn. You can post pics of your accomplishments...and failures. You can find free patterns for just about anything. And a ton of people who can help you along your journey in the yarn arts. I highly recommend it.

I crochet. I've tried knitting but I couldn't get the hang of it. Crocheting is very simple and I like that fact that I pretty much have a free hand. The choice is up to you, but I vote yes lol. I'm a member of craftster also, its a great site for project ideas Also ravelry.com

A lot of people do both. My Mom did. Check out this site. You can get a lot of ideas and assistance. There are also patterns and tutorials. http://www.craftster.org/forum/

I love to crochet. Have been for 40 years off and on. I have a pretty collection of lovely yarns waiting to be used! I do very little knitting as it can get so intricate and can vary so much in the stitching. I like the idea of one tool also. You can make a lot of little thing using many different sizes of yarns and threads. Good luck with your new adventure! Linda

You can knit hats flat and then seam them up. You can even knit mittens flat and seam them up. I wonder why you find knitting in the round difficult, as I find it much easier to just keep knitting around and around. Not to mention that it's faster to keep knitting in a straight line rather than turning the work at the end of each row. And if you're knitting a ribbing pattern, you don't even have to mark the beginning of the round. I knit right many sweaters and vests in children's sizes for a charity project, and I have converted the patterns to knitting in the round to avoid seams. Oh, and I use the longest circular needles I can find. Once I found out about using circulars and keeping the "extra" length of the cable out of the way, I quit using straight needles altogether. You might want to think about looking for articles about "magic loop" knitting--or maybe not. I agree with you that making big things can get bor-ring very fast. I just finished an afghan I started well over a year ago, but I'd knit a lot of small things in the same time frame. Crocheting can be used for almost anything that knitting can be used for. It's a bit faster to crochet the "same" item than to knit it, and it takes more yarn. Also, crochet is less flexible than knitting that uses the same yarn and covers the same square footage. And I find it easier to make a mistake in crochet and harder to fix the mistakes. Addendum: I do both about equally. To me, crochet is the method of choice for afghans and blankets; knitting is preferable for garments; it's a toss-up on hats. YMMV

I do both and continue doing both, but do find crocheting is much more easier to pack and travel with and have to worry only about the one hook and not the two and its easier to travel with considering you either have to carry a loom and hook and yarn and then the two needles and yarn. It's easier to keep track of your yarn and hook that way and you can always pick up right where you left off with crochet and not have to worry just where you left off with the loom and row of knitting.

I love to crochet. I find it so much faster than knitting. I crochet hats, small clutches, fingerless gloves, afghan squares that I crochet together to make baby blankets, cell phone cases, even sweaters. Crochet is easier to travel with=no lost stitches that mischievously slip off the needles. A hook, some yarn and away you go. Crocheting a border around a knitted item can be just the right finishing touch. So, I encourage you to take up crochet.

You should try crochet so that you know some of the basic stitches. They do come in handy in all kinds of work. But you can also do cro-knit.... http://www.crochetkim.com/tunisiancrohook.html that combines both. You can do some really interesting kinds of fabrics in that technique. http://www.anniesattic.com/crochet/content.html?cat_id=336&type_id=S http://www.crochetkim.com/patterns/crohookdishcloth.html
