How To Knit With A Knitting Board?

I know this is probably silly, but if you don't have knitting needles can you still knit?

  • Let's just say I had some pencils or something of the sort. Can I knit with them? Is it going to be a lot harder because I don't have knitting needles? I'm planning to go out this week and get some knitting needles. It's just right now I would really like to knit and scarf but I currently don't have knitting needles. Anyway any help would be great. = )

  • Answer:

You can make your own knitting needles from wooden dowels. You just need a needle gauge. This is a metal or plastic piece with holes for each size you can get at any place that sells needles. Directions are here: http://www.3gcs.com/adcock/free%20patterns/handmade_knitting_needles.htm

it would be possible.. you could try skewers or chopsticks also if you really wanted to. =] ♥♫♣

as long as both items skews, chopsticks ect are the same size. You would have to knit a sample to figure out the gauge.. Hope this helps.

yeah, i think pencils or any stick like things will work. but they're probably harder to knit. i don't think you can knit a scarf in a couple of days considering you are just a beginner but i might be wrong. So after you get your knitting needles, you'll probably have to transfer it from the pencil to the needle. <----this can be fustrating especially if you end up loosing a stitch while trying to transfer it. best advice is to wait for the knitting needles.

soooo cool to knit with pencils. :-) Of course you can knit with pencils if it is long enough. And if you need some good knitting needles. Here click this URL for more information. http://www.8season-knitting.com/ Warm your hands with their bamboo knitting needles in winter.

You can knit with just about anything - pencils (icky lead marks, though!) chopsticks, etc. Grind down a dowel, carve hour own with a twig and a penknife. That being said, proper equipment definitely helps a beginner! There's a lot to learn about yarn tension, keeping the stitches on the needle, getting your working yarn in the right place (in front of or behind the needle as needed.) With all of that, working with odd-sized needles, extra-rough or slippery needles, needles that are the wrong gauge for your yarn, etc. will just make it more difficult to learn. For first time knitters, I recommend a light-colored yarn of a medium (worsted weight) and some #9 (US size) needles. You'll get a moderate stitch, the wool has a bit of give to it, and the light color makes it easier to see the stitches so you can see what you're doing. Knitpicks has some great needles and yarn at decent prices. They also deliver quickly. You might want to check them out so you can get some quality supplies you might not find at your local Big Craft Store. Then just get a good book or find some of the great videos online. It'll take a while - don't get discouraged - but you'll be knitting and purling before long!

chopsticks and little bamboo skewers. You are going to have to sharpen them, and it would help if sand them.
