Beginner: What should I buy for my Brother sewing machine?? HELP!?
-
I've used a sewing machine a couple of times, so I have an idea about what I'm doing. But, when I sew I was always using someone elses stuff. I have not a clue what I need to buy for projects....pin cushion, thread, needles, bobbins etc ? I'm buying a Brother CS5055PRW Sewing Machine (computerized), and I'm not sure what thread to buy for it....will any size thread work? Also, are there any cheap sewing kits ($10-$30) and cheap (but well made) fabric I can buy online? Thank you to anyone who can help me out!

Answer:
Cheap kits of sewing notions are just that... the absolute minimum. You can do much better buying things separately. If you've got a Joann or Hancock around, they have pretty good sales about once a month on "notions walls" or "cutting materials"; the prices at Walmart for basics are pretty good all the time. Your machine will come with enough to get you started, but buy some extra sewing machine needles (size 80/12 and an assortment of sizes) universal point -- you'll break and damage needles when you're first learning to sew. See: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110730151524AAt5pgY Buy a package of bobbins for this machine: they are plastic "class 15" bobbins, and you'll want about a dozen or so (4 come with the machine). Buy two colors of the same brand and type sewing thread -- Coats, American Efird and Gutermann are the most common brands, and you want the sort called "dressmaker", which is the regular sewing thread. The reason you're going to buy two different colors is that it will help you sort out most common beginner sewing machine operation problems... look here: http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/22521551 These are the pins I like for beginners: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kEF9F_WXeZc/TWVbpH8zf2I/AAAAAAAANQE/Oq7t6pq7XqE/s1600/pins.jpg They're big and bright and remind you not to sew over them. If I were your teacher, you'd be mostly sewing without pins in the first month... they really don't help accuracy of stitching much, and it's better to learn good fabric handling.

Someone else will no doubt give you a list of notions you need like scissors, pin cushion etc. Here are some places online to buy fabric. They also have lots of other things related to sewing. http://www.craftconn.com/ http://homesew.com/ http://newarkdress.com/ http://www.nancysnotions.com/ http://www.clotilde.com/

At www.joann.com you can find all sorts of fabric and sewing notions. The little bits & pieces you use when sewing (pins, measuring tape, needles, and so on) are called notions, though I've no idea why. You can purchase a kit, if you prefer. I like assembling my own. Here are some things I'd put in it: sewing machine oil sewing machine cleaning brush measuring tape fabric scissors -- "try them on" first to see if they fit your hand and are comfy to use large spool of black thread large spool of white thread smaller spools of whatever colors of thread you will be likely to use bobbins that fit your machine (class 15 or class 66 are the most common, check your machine to see which ones it takes -- bobbin sizes are specific to a machine, be sure you get the right size) hand sewing needles sewing machine needles pins -- I like the ones with a colored head so I can find them on the floor if I drop them small magnet to help you collect spilled pins or needles (it happens)

You buy thread to suit the fabric you are sewing not the sewing machine. A polyester thread is best because you can use it on just about any fabric. You need various sizes of machine needles. Again the fabric dictates which size you use . The finer the fabric the finer the needle. Size 90 is a medium size needle. Bobbins vary so tell the shop which machine you have or take one with you to make sure you get the correct ones. If you buy on line the site usually tells you which machines they are suitable for.
