How to make a dress at home without the use of a sewing machine?
-
I am going to Vegas in 8 months and have found the perfect dress. it is from forever 21 and is a black one shoulder party dress with silver and blue sequins design on it. Only problem is, it doesn't look too flattering on me, but the style screams Vegas! I want to take the sequin design, which is the front of the dress, and separate it by cutting it from the liner and back the dress. I could either take the whole front of the dress or just cut out the design from the front and glue gun the sequin design on a black tube dress that I have that does look good on me. Do you think this would work? Ive never made anything fashion wise at home, and don't have a sewing machine. Any dress makers or seamstresses in the area have not been willing to help since Im not hiring them to do the job. any help, suggestions or recommendations you can make is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:
Don't use a glue gun, it will just fall off. Hand sew it with thread and a needle. If the design is very thick use a rubber grip (a small circle shaped piece of thin rubber which is available in craft stores) to help you hold on to the needle to push it through the fabric. If you just want the design of the Forever 21 dress, then cut that part out and sew it on the dress that fits you. Trying to add the front of a one-shoulder dress to the back of a tube dress might look weird, especially if you don't have a lot of experience altering clothes. Plus, it's more work and takes forever without a sewing machine.

Sorry, but I not recommends hand sewing. Unless you have hand sewn for a long time, most beginner sewers just can not hand sew well enough for it to look good or to hold seam When you cut the fabric from the dress you may find it will fray Glue from a glue gun drys hard and stiff. And could melt the sequins.

Well first of all, do NOT try to glue it. It will either look really cheap or fall off. I would either suggest that you take the issue to a friend that has a sewing machine and knows how to use it, or hand sew it yourself. If you dont know how to hand sew, I suggest you learn. Hope this helps!

It should be easy if you know anything about hand-sewing. And it should go on faster than you'd expect. If the sequin design is heavy on it's own you can use fabric glue to help hold it in place while you sew. If it's lighter I'd stick with pins (if possible) to avoid making it stiff. All you'll need is a whip stitch which is the easiest stitch there is. If the tube dress is a knit (stretchy) material then more care is needed. Any chance of posting a picture of both the sequins and the tube dress? It'd be easier to advise then.
