How to make metal jewellery?

How can I age a new coin to make it look "used" for a jewellery item ?

  • I have a new "cent" from US and want to make it look "old". Can anyone help? I know putting it in coke makes it look new, i want the opposite!

  • Answer:

Especially because this item is going to be worn I think it is important that you don't actually corrode the penny or damage it. However, you should remember that paint is your friend!!! Especially Acrylic paint... If you want it to look corroded, as copper does when exposed to water and oxygen, I would suggest using a light green paint and heavily dabbing that in areas. Once that dries, go over it with a clear coat to seal it. OR... what you can do is paint it black, let it dry for just a minute.. carefully wipe the excess and there should only be a little bit of black in the creases. You would of course put a clear coat over top of that as well. I have always found that acrylic pain is the best way to go when wanting to achieve an aged or antiqued look.. it is easy to do, easy to clean up, and if you mess up you can just wash it off! Plus, you don't have to be some spectacular artist, but everyone will think you are!

depends how much time you have. easiest way is to pound it with two rocks, hammer, whatev. then to discolor it, place it in a small net secured somewhere and let a dirty river or stream flow through it. you can also put it in your leaves gutter on your roof and rain and dirt will mess it up. you can also blowtorch it to get it darker, but not melt it. or u can stick in on a bike tire and ride around making sure you run over it, and go into a field or mud. Many things you can do!! Have fun!!

Wrap it in a newspaper or any paper with acid or sulpher in it. In other words cheap paper. Put it in a window in the sun. The longer in the sun the older it looks. Do one side then the other. If you live in a place that has nice hot sun this time of year it will not take too long. Or to tone it, but be careful not to melt it, bake it in the oven until brown.(no pun intended).

hi there, I am a professional magician and the technique we use for making coins look old/worn is as follows... You need to get a wet-stone (used for sharpening knives) and hold the coin flat against it, push down on the coin and make figure 8 circles with the coin against the stone. Do this for both sides and after a while the coin will start to appear to be old and worn. Hope this helps.

No need to do anything. Just attach the cent directly to your jewellery piece and start wearing it. Easy as that. The copper plated cent will tarnish pretty fast and naturally as you wear it. Just a thing, be careful when you handle your cent, coz any finger print marks will spoil the look no matter how well you age it.

I have heard if you put a coin in a glass of coke for a number of days it starts to turn colour. It definitely says something about the value of coke for your body. Give it a try. This site talks about the power of vinegar on various metals. Check it out.

well you could do what 'Kevin H' says though that might hurt! You could try (carefully) holding it over a naked flame as this will cause it to change colour.

leave it in water for a 24 hours (I'm not sure but I think it should be salt water) .. then it should look old
