Tips for applique with several pieces?
-
I've been quilting for a long time but don't do much applique. Now I want to applique the Iowa Hawkeye logo onto a square to incorporate into a quilt. There are 4 pieces to the logo and I don't know how to make sure I keep them straight. Is there any trick to making sure the pieces are exactly the way the logo is drawn? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Answer:
I looked up the logo to see what you mean. I am a commercial embroidery business owner and have done a lot of applique for my customers. I gather you are thinking that you would cut out the yellow gold fabric (therefore 4 pieces) and stitch it onto black. I would do it differently - in the "negative". The easiest way I can see is to draw the shapes onto a black fabric in the area where they should be. Then cut away the pieces from the black fabric. Then, place a yellow gold piece of fabric underneath - you might also be able to spray glue it together to hold them in place while stitching them together. This way there are only 2 pieces of fabric to work with and you won't have to worry about lining things up. Then, do your satin stitch in gold around the edges of the gold shapes to finish it and keep the black from fraying. I think this would be the easiest way & I hope this makes sense. If not, let me know and I'll try to explain it better.

An image like that one might be a good candidate for using the "reverse applique" method (similar to the idea suggested by the first answerer): https://www.google.com/images?q=how+to+reverse+applique https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+reverse+applique If you want to use the regular applique method though, you can use one of the techniques for cutting out the 4 pieces (along with extra for turning under), then sewing to the base fabric...there are several techniques which may use different supplies: https://www.google.com/images?q=how+to+applique https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+applique Or you could do "machine applique" by sewing a zigzag stitch or a hemming stitch around the edge of each piece: https://www.google.com/images?q=how+to+machine+applique https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+machine+applique With any of the "positive" applique methods, you could use basting spray under the pieces to hold them in position while appliquing, if you're not using a fusible web or freezer paper or something else adhesive to hold them in place. As for making sure the pieces all end up in the "right" places on the base fabric, you can trace or outline the pieces on the base fabric with a special marker that becomes invisible after contact with the air for awhile, or after being wetted. Or you could use a *light* pencil marking.
