What's the difference between fabric markers and regular markers?

    I own a commercial embroidery company and it is standard practice to use a marker if your bobbin thread happens to show on the top. I have used both fabric markers and permanent markers and have not found a difference - at least for my purpose. The difference that I have found is that fabric markers come in limited colours and are more expensive. I buy permanent markers because of all the colours you can get to match the thread you use. Also, you need to know what kind of "tip" you want. Fabric markers are always pointed. I use pointed markers so that the colour goes exactly where I want it too. Actually, sharpies can be used to permanently dye fabric. If you use polyester or silky type material and draw on it, then spray with rubbing alcohol, the colours run and create beautiful patterns. Let sit 24 hours to set, then launder. I've watched videos of this on You Tube when searching fabric dying.

The colours can be anything you want, almost. But the difference is that some markers will run when you try to wash them out. Some will make a bad stain. Some will not wash out, so it all depends on what you want. Normally, you use a fabric marker on a hidden part of the fabric to identify it in some way, and this does not spread or wash out. Sometimes you want it only temporarily, while sewing for example, and then you want it all washed out when you are done. You must choose the correct type for success.
