Where can we learn sewing?

How to learn to work a Sewing Machine

  • I need to help my brother sew some things for a play he's the technical director for. I know how to hand sew but for the stuff I'm making a sewing machine will have stronger stitches and will result in a lesser chance that It'll break on stage. Any youtube.com videos or websites that may aid me in learning quickly?

Go to about.com They have tutorials on how a machine works, how to thread a machine, and lots more. Try this link: http://sewing.about.com/od/sewingmachineindex/bb/sewingmachines.htm

I didn't find any on Youtube but the Etsy store may have some tutorials for you.

It might be easier to go to a sewing machine center where they sell machines. They usually have very low cost classes or you can ask how a machine works and they will provide free instruction. I know Bernina and Janome centers have these services. Check your yellow pages, Also you might be able to go to the Extension Office in your county and get help from them on the use of machines. Their services are free. Stitching is only as strong as the thread you are using. If you use cheap thread nothing will hold very long even if using a machine. Sometimes I prefer the hand stitching to be sure it holds well.

Unless you learn the "basics" in a class, you'll find it frustrating when the machine "doesn't work right" or the thread gets tangled. Don't mess with the machine settings unless you know what you're doing!! If you are in a hurry to get this done here are some options: Let your need for "costume sewers" be known by announcements or by flyers among the cast and stage crew (offer free play tickets) for volunteers. If you have any budget for costumes, consider putting some of that toward hiring someone to sew for you...if you want it done right and quickly. Moms of cast members are a great resource for costuming help. To find a professional to do your sewing - most any Cleaners will offer mending and sewing as one of their services. Often the person will take home the items to work on, and bring them back finished in a few days or a week. You may need to schedule "fitting" or "measuring" appointments with the seamstress for the persons these costumes are for.
