Try Scola Cell adhesive as an alternative to wallpaper paste. It does not contain fungicide and is less tacky than PVA. PVA makes a good coating between layers of newspaper as it strengthens the item so you don't need to use so many layers. You can also thin it down and use it as a soft glaze.

Tear up some old newspapers soak the shredded newspapers in 5 parts water one part bleach to soften the paper machie to make it easier to shape it after a few hours, take out the softened pulp and apply it onto a surface to mold that shape or onto a flat surface to make crepe paper !

I use old newspaper,water and PVA glue Itear the paper in strips put in a liquidiser with water and fritz it, when it is a nice runny mush remove and squeeze out most of the water mix in some pva and place on a piece of muslin in a sieve. When most of the remaining water has gone you can take the mache and need it like bread. It is now a very workable and strong medium that you can model or put into moulds. Allow to dry, paint, and there you are. I don't use wallpaper paste. as most of the modern ones contain fungicide which can be absorbed through the skin

The easiest recipe is with plain white glue and water. Mix 2 parts glue to 1 part water in a large bowl or pan. Hand strip newspaper and soak it in the glue mixture for a few minutes and then begin to lay the strips over what shape you are needing. Recently we needed to create a "boulder" or a "rock" for a school project so we wadded up newspaper into a ball and begin to lay strips of the mache' over.
