How To Crochet Turkish Edging?

Which is double crochet and half double crochet?

  • Okay so I learned that double crochet is: Yarn over hook, Insert hook in the next stitch to be worked, Yarn over hook, Pull yarn through stitch, Yarn over hook, Pull yarn through 2 loops on hook, Yarn over hook, Pull yarn through last 2 loops on hook (one double crochet made) but my mother in law says its yarn over hook, insert hook and yarn over, pull up. yarn over pull through one, yarn over pull through two, yarn over, pull through two. Which one is correct and if my mother in law is incorrect which stitch is she doing? What she is doing sounds like a treble crochet to me (only backwards). She also says that what I am doing is a half double crochet and not a double crochet. I know hdc to be yarn over, insert hook into stitch yarn over pull through (three yarn on hook) pull through all three. So all you crochet geeks tell me who is correct!! Cause I am soooo confused!!

  • Answer:

You might both be right depending on where you are from US or UK the stitch names are different. Check out this chart for the stitch conversions http://www.yarnfwd.com/main/crochet.html This is also good to know if you have a pattern from a different country you maybe using the wrong stitch and not even know it. A hdc is when you yarn over, pull yarn through stitch, yarn over, pull through all three stitches on hook. That what is says in my instruction book (US stitches). I hope this helps

You describe what in the US is called double crochet. Half double crochet is yarn over hook, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over hook and pull thru st, yarn over hook and pull thru all 3 loops on hook. These stitches have different names here in the UK and I thought that would be the solution to your question. But your MIL is doing a stitch not in the regular basic stitch books. It may be a stitch she uses and I'm sure looks very pretty but it isn't called dc or hdc.

You are doing a US dc, your MIL is doing an extended dc (edc). The poster above me described how to do a hdc perfectly.
