What sewing machine should I buy?

  • I took sewing in middle school and helped my grandma a few times, but I'm still pretty novice. So, I want to buy a machine and need some help. Needs: I'm short, 99% of my sewing will probably be hemming (including jean material) I'm not thinking about making my own clothing, but perhaps adding to store made clothing (redoing T-shirts and the like) Really, I'm concerned that if I go too cheaply I won't be able to hem jeans. Is there a specific number or stat to watch so I know my basic machine will still be able to handle fabrics (jeans, cords, cotton, sweat-shirt type) Thanks

    Before you spend a lot of money for a machine with features you won't use, try the thrift stores . You could find a good machine that may only need a tuneup. Most machines will sew fabrics of different weights. Go to a store that sells machines like Sears and ask to try out a few. Their basic machines are not that expensive. You should also get a sewing book that explains about needle sizes and types of seams appropriate for the fabric you are using.

I also am short, and i can tell you that you don't need an expensive sewing machine. I would suggest that you by a singer sewing machine because they are quality sewing machine. I would also suggest that you by a new one if you are not familiar with repairing a sewing machine, since repairing a sewing machine can be very hard and costly if your warranty has expired. Also make sure get spare needles because they can break. Good luck
