Crochet advice needed for my baby afghan?
-
Hi! I'm going to crochet an afghan for my baby. It is my first major project and I really care about how it turns out. I have 2 questions, (about the yarn I chose and what hook size to use,) before I start. This is the Bernat pattern I'm going to use: http://www.bernat.com/pattern.php?PID=3950 (The entire pattern is copied below, incase you don't have a Bernat account to view the pattern.) QUESTION #1. (Yarn) Do you think the yarn I bought, will work with the pattern? The pattern said to use Bernat Softee Baby yarn. (3 - light 4.00 mm, US - G/6;) I bought Patons Canadiana (4 - medium5.00 mm, US - H/8); because I found in these colors: MC =Royal Blue 24451010134 Contrast =Cardinal 24451010707 Ombre =Rainbow 24451111625 QUESTION #2. (Hook size) Which hook size would you use? The pattern is very confusing. It says to use a 4.5mm hook in the description, but underneath the materials list, it says to use a 5mm hook. And the yarns also suggest other hook sizes, so I've very confused on which to use. I own a Cover soft Touch in H/5mm and G/4mm. Would either of these work? HERE IS THE PATTERN: Softee Baby - Soft Stripes Blanket (crochet) Multicolored bobbles and stripes are cozy and inviting in this baby blanket. Shown in Bernat Softee Baby. Answer:
The yarn you've chosen should work just fine, although the blanket might be a bit thicker. What you need to worry about is the gauge. The pattern says that the gauge should be 15 dc and 8 rows = 4 ins, which means that a four by four inch square should be 8 rows high and 15 double crochet stitches across. Play around with your chosen yarn and different hooks until you can achieve the gauge, and then use that hook for your project. It really depends on how tightly or loosely you crochet compared to the "average." Good luck, and have fun!
