What is the interpretation of rail -roading phenomena?

Few questions about Model Rail Roading....?

  • 1. Is it never to old to do? 2. How can I convince my family to let me "TAKE" over a whole room for this project? 3. Is it worth it, a good hobby? Thanks

  • Answer:

Too old? Never! I am not a model railroader myself, but I am a long-time adult and have several adult friends (who have been adults for many years) who are avid and devoted railroad modelers. Some folks are skilled in building their own units from scratch, even sometimes designing and molding the locomotives. Some are more interested in purchasing everything and assembling their layouts. You can do HO, O, or N gauge or others, depending on your own circumstances. Some take special pride in true scale, some in historical accuracy, some in their own creativeness. I could go on at length, but the idea is that Model Railroading is a valid, respectable hobby that can sometimes even lead to financial or social rewards. Yes, it is worth it. Yes, it is a good hobby. The key is your own degree of interest. But never, never, never be embarrassed or shy about declaring your love of this hobby. Some folks will call them "toy trains," but just smile and politely correct them. These are MODEL trains on a MODEL railroad. Take your hobby where you desire. Enjoy. Here is one of many sites that will give much information: http://www.nmra.org/ It is the National Model Railroad Association site. http://www.walthers.com/ is a great supplier. http://www.atlasrr.com/ is another good supplier. http://www.trains.com/mrr/ is for Model Railroader Magazine. These ought to give you "ammunition" to convince your parents. However, a lot may depend on how much room your house has to spare. You might even try getting your parents or friends interested in the hobby. Also, if you form a club or group, that might carry some weight with your parents. And...honest, this might work...if you know or know of someone on a newspaper or local TV station, you might suggest that your new hobby and its progression might make a good story for them to follow over time. Your parents just might like that. Model railroaders--men and women--come from all walks of life. Some are doctors or lawyers or singers or policemen. Some are factory workers and some work in grocery stores. Some are retired, some are little kids (and some of those are very skilled modelers or history buffs). Some are teachers and some are business owners. Some are architects and some are carpenters. Some are students, some are parents. And the list goes on.................. Anyway, know that your hobby is a good one. Go for it. And good luck...while you enjoy it all.

Other answers

1) Model Railroading is a hobby you are NEVER too old for... though some of us in our 40's have to buy magnifying spectacles to work in N-scale. 2) That is up to YOU... though drawings and more drawings help show that you have thought the layout through. 3) YES, I've been in off and on since 1974 and love the time I spend on my railroad: I have a shelf-layout in my bedroom. It is current era operations of the Union Pacific in the San Jose and Stockton Area. GOOD LUCK
