What is glitter made from? and how is it made?

    Most glitter nowadays is made from painted or aluminized shredded plastic or paper. The plastic is either painted or chemically coated with aluminum or by putting it in a sort of oven where the aluminum is melted into a vapor and settles on the plastic. This is the same way they make shiny potato chip bags! Then the plastic (usually mylar) is mechanically ground up to make arts and crafts glitter. Ground glass is still used in reflective highway stripe paints, but rarely is used in arts and crafts.

first it is a big piece of shiney paper then it is cut into tiny little pieces.

Atually it is made of a plastic known as Mylar...the same stiff that those shinny ballons are made of...go figure...

I don't really know but I remembar an experiment: in a dark room you rub two pieces of quartz together quickly; after about 10 seconds you see the glitter coming from inside. It's the heat turning into light. Try it. It's pretty cool.
