How do you like your job as a physician assistant?

Everyone is telling me that Physician Assistant is not a good job?

  • everyone in my family is telling me that PA's get treated bad, they work long hours, they don't have vacations, and that I should just apply to medical school and become an actual doctor instead of being like an understudy. AND that becoming a doctor sounds more impressive than being a PA. 1. Do physician assistants really get treated bad? 2. How long hours do they usually work? 3. Are they on call just like doctors are? 4. Does the actual doctor have to be in the same room as the PA when treating or diagnosing a patient or is it just permission?

Why not shadow one at a hospital for a few days? Contact the volunteer department. They handle these requests all the time. Sounds to me your family simply wants a doctor.

We don't have them in the UK or NZ so I don't know how they would be viewed by the medical profession but I suspect it would be far more favorably than by your family. People with the mind set "you will become a Lawyer, an accountant, a Doctor or you are a communist" still exist although thankfully in smaller numbers than before. It sound like if you wanted to be a physiotherapist your family would push you to be a sports medicine doctor. In reality these jobs are completely different and If you enjoy doing 1 you probably won't enjoy doing the other. If you want to be a sports medicine specialist you shouldn't aim to be a physiotherapist and vice versa. What do you want to do? Find out what that is and if your family don't like it tell them where they can stick it. Its your life not theirs so its not fair for them to live their ambition through you.
